Most likely, you played Bargains of Power and Protection on an earlier turn. That creates a permanent effect that reduces the first Energy you gain each turn - whether it comes from Growth, your Gain Energy step, Power Card effects, or any other effect. The effect stacks, so it can end up costing quite a lot!
